I'm too old to have a mid-life crisis.
From Breathing Lessons, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Switch found a gray hair on the mailman today, or claimed to, and spent the afternoon asking me how old I was in squirrel years. I did the arithmetic twice and got two different answers, which is its own kind of answer. For a long stretch of my twenties I was certain the middle of a life was a place you arrived at, with a gate and a sign, and that something would go wrong there on schedule. I'm too old to have a mid-life crisis. The thing about the middle is you only ever locate it from the far end, and by then you have other business. Switch lost interest and went after an acorn he had buried in April and could not find.
He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
