Life is suffering, especially when you fall out of your chair laughing at it.
From Before We Were Young, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Switch found a folding chair somebody left out by the garage, the kind with a torn green seat, and spent the afternoon trying to sit in it like a man. He got three seconds of it before the whole thing went over sideways, and he laughed so hard going down that he forgot to land well, which is a thing I did not know a squirrel could forget. For years I took the old line seriously and kept it close, the way you keep a coat you expect weather for; suffering seemed the honest position and everything else a distraction from it. Life is suffering, especially when you fall out of your chair laughing at it. He went back to the chair four more times. The fifth time it held and he sat there looking disappointed, and I have been turning that over since, the part where it held.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
