The road will change you, if you’re on the right road.
From The Beginning Viewed from the End, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Rode the thermal over the county highway this morning and followed a pickup for eleven miles just to see where it went. It went to a feed store. I used to think a journey was a thing you survived intact, that the point was arriving still yourself, and I was proud of coming back from Maine the same bird that left. Switch came up the trunk at dusk with half a walnut and told me he no longer takes the fence route because the fence route taught him something about dogs. The road will change you, if you're on the right road. What I cannot work out is whether the man at the feed store had been changed by eleven miles of county highway or whether he drives it every Tuesday and it has stopped being a road at all.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
