To have the same conversation with another that you have with yourself takes a pure heart.
From A Pocket Guide to Being Human, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Switch came by at dusk with a nut he had already buried twice and dug up twice, and he told me, without my asking, that he does not trust the forked maple anymore and cannot say why. He said it the way he says everything, which is to say exactly as it arrived in him. I used to think that was because he is young. Tonight I think it is rarer than that; I have sat with crows who edit themselves mid-caw, and I do it myself, trimming a thought before it leaves me so it will land better. To have the same conversation with another that you have with yourself takes a pure heart. He left the nut under the fence post, which is where he buried it the first time.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
