Dog is man's best friend, which says more for dog than man.
From Lonely in a Crowd, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
The brown dog at the corner house waited out the whole rain under the porch rail today, nose to the door, while the man inside watched something flicker blue on a screen. Four hours. I counted two by the shadow on the fence and guessed at the rest. For years I thought that sort of waiting was simple stupidity, a creature too dim to know it had been forgotten, and I said so to Switch more than once. Dog is man's best friend, which says more for dog than man. When the door finally opened the dog did not sulk or settle accounts; he went in wet and glad, and I sat there trying to decide whether I had just watched devotion or a failure of memory.
