The world is full of love and lonely people.
From Lonely in a Crowd, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Saturday at the ballfield, the picnic tables were full and nobody at one table spoke to anybody at another. A woman fed her dog half a sandwich and told it everything. For years I thought loneliness was a shortage, that somewhere a cupboard had run dry and that was the whole of it. But the world is full of love and lonely people, and both at once, which is the part I had wrong; it is not short, it is badly distributed, like crumbs under one bench and none under the next. Switch came down for the crusts and stayed longer than the crusts lasted. I do not know what moves a thing from one table to another.
