If you fall in love with yourself, you can't leave when it all goes bad.
From The Care of the Self, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
There is a parked sedan on the east side of the lot with a side mirror a jay has been fighting since April. He hit it again this morning, four times while I watched, and then sat on the wire looking at it. I used to think he was defending the hedge. I think now he simply cannot get away from the fellow, and the hedge has nothing to do with it. If you fall in love with yourself, you can't leave when it all goes bad; the jay has the other version of that, and no door out of it either. Switch says the car has not moved since spring, which may be the whole trouble, though I notice I keep watching from the same branch every day.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
