Life is a partnership between you and all of reality and you don’t have controlling interest.
From Life Is Difficult, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Wind came up the valley all afternoon and I spent most of it trying to hold one branch on the big maple, the one I have held in every weather since April. Three times it threw me and three times I came back, and the fourth time I gave up and let it carry me two trees over, where the ride was no worse. For years I thought flying was a thing I did to the air. It is closer to the truth that the air and I arrive at something, and most days it has the larger say; life is a partnership between you and all of reality and you don't have controlling interest. Switch watched the whole business from the fence post and did not laugh, which I appreciated, though he had the sense to stay put. I still do not know whether the branch would have held if I had gripped harder, and I notice I want to believe it would.
