If you can't take one more thing, get ready for two.
From Life Is Difficult, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
The ice storm took the elm limb that held my best perch, and I spent the morning telling myself that was the limit of what the week could ask. By noon the feeder had come down too, chain and all, and a dog I have never seen before was standing in the yard with the suet in his mouth. I used to think trouble came one at a time out of some sense of fairness, that a bad thing bought you a quiet week after. If you can't take one more thing, get ready for two. Switch sat in the broken elm eating a frozen crabapple and did not appear to have noticed any of it, which is either stupidity or a kind of accounting I have not learned.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
