More protest when their feet go numb than when their mind does.
From Life Is Difficult, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
A man sat on the cold bench by the library steps for most of the afternoon, phone up, thumb going, and never once looked at the sycamore dropping its bark two feet from his ear. Around four he stood up fast, swore, and stamped both feet on the sidewalk until the blood came back. That stamping was the liveliest thing he did all day. I used to think boredom was the danger, that a dull hour was an hour subtracted; now I think the hour he lost was the one he never felt go. More protest when their feet go numb than when their mind does. Switch says squirrels get pins and needles too, which I doubt, and he could not tell me what it feels like when I asked.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
