An angry leader commands your attention but not your respect.

From Leaving No Stone Unthrown, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.

From Alfred’s journal

There was a man by the ballfield this afternoon shouting at a boy about a dropped throw, and every head on the bleachers turned, and mine did too, and so did the dog's. I used to think that was a kind of power. For years I took the loudest bird on the wire for the one worth watching, and I have since noticed that we watch the loud one the way we watch a branch coming down. An angry leader commands your attention but not your respect; the boy gave him both eyes and nothing else. What interested me was the quiet father two rows up, who never raised his voice all game and whose son kept looking over to find him. I do not know yet whether the looking is the same thing as respect or only the start of it.
