Birds love leftovers too.
From Alfred at Christmas, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
A woman on the bench by the laundromat ate half a sandwich and wrapped the rest back up, and I waited the way I always wait, and then she put it in her bag and left. Switch thought this was a scandal. For years I assumed a person who saves food is a person who does not want it, and I came down on that assumption from a low branch many times, and I was wrong every time; she wanted it later, is all. Birds love leftovers too, though we are worse at the waiting part. A gull by the water will swallow a whole roll rather than hold it. I sat there a while thinking about what I have thrown myself at because I could not stand to want it tomorrow.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
