How easy it would be to change, if the people around us would change first!
From A Pocket Guide to Being Human, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Switch came back from the Haddams' yard with a complaint about the gray cat, which sits on the porch rail and watches him and will not stop watching him. He has worked out that if the cat would quit, he could use the whole fence line again. I said something about going around by the hedge and he looked at me as though I had suggested he grow a second tail. For years I thought stubbornness was the trouble, that he simply would not move; now I think he was waiting, honestly and patiently, for the world to go first. How easy it would be to change, if the people around us would change first. I sat with that on the wire until dark, and the cat never did get up, and neither did I.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
