Ideas grow best in the space between two minds.
From A Pocket Guide to Being Human, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
Two men sat at the far end of the bench by the ball field today, arguing about whether the oak at the corner was dying or only slow. Neither of them won. But by the time they got up, the one who said dying was talking about the drought three summers back, and the other was saying maybe the roots, and they had built a thing between them that neither had carried in. I used to think a thought was finished before it was spoken, that talking was just the delivery of it, which is what you believe when you spend your days alone in a tree. Ideas grow best in the space between two minds. Switch has heard me say half a sentence and finished it wrong, and the wrong ending was better than mine, and I still do not know what to do with that.
