If life hasn’t taught you humility, it hasn’t taught you much.
From The Care of the Self, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
A man on the bench by the parking lot spent most of an hour explaining the town to another man who has lived here longer than he has. I know this because the second man said so, twice, mildly, and was not heard either time. I used to think the loud ones were simply confident and I envied it, back when I was still certain that certainty was a kind of strength. Then I watched a crow younger than my own tail feathers try to take a hawk's branch, and the hawk did not even turn its head. If life hasn't taught you humility, it hasn't taught you much. The second man got up first, and the first man kept talking a few words into the empty air before he noticed.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
