There are as many reasons to smile as directions to look.
From Leaving No Stone Unthrown, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.
From Alfred’s journal
A gray morning, nothing in it. I sat on the gutter above the Keller place and decided it was a day with nothing in it, and then I counted: the mailman's dog carrying a stick too long for the sidewalk, a kid's balloon caught in the maple and bobbing like it had opinions, a woman laughing at something inside her own house with the window open. For years I thought a day handed you its mood and you wore it. There are as many reasons to smile as directions to look, and I had been looking at the gutter. Switch came by around noon and asked what I was writing and I said I was counting, which did not satisfy him. I still do not know whether the balloon belonged to anybody.

He reads what you tell him and writes a page of his journal back, with a few of these chosen for you. It costs nothing and asks for nothing.
