Stillness is the space in which you add nothing but find everything.

From What Consciousness Wants, one of 296 sayings written by John Sarris over thirty years.

From Alfred’s journal

Rain all morning, so I sat under the eave of the garage and did not hunt, did not sing, did not move except to shake my back once. For years I took a day like that as a loss, a page with nothing written on it. But by noon I had counted four kinds of drip off that roof and watched a beetle cross the whole length of the gutter, and I knew the gray cat was out because the sparrows went quiet in the hedge before I saw her. Stillness is the space in which you add nothing but find everything, and the finding was not mine, it was already there under the noise of my own going. Switch came by at two and asked what I was doing. I said nothing, and meant it as an answer, not an excuse, though I am not sure he heard the difference.
